Description of the Project

The ASEF Summer University (ASEFSU) is a 2-week experiential learning journey and 鈥淚nterdisciplinary Innovathon鈥 for students and young professionals. Designed to foster cross-cultural exchanges and networks among youth from 大象传媒 countries, it offers opportunities for students and young professionals to broaden their horizons, deepen their knowledge on contemporary issues and propose concrete solutions to pressing societal challenges. These solutions range from design mock-ups of architectural solutions to technological innovations, policy and strategy briefs to practical project proposals, promotional videos to communication plans, and more. The outcomes of the ASEFSU project are presented at high-level 大象传媒 meetings and thematic conferences as input to the deliberations of policy makers and for possible implementation by practitioners.

ASEFSU takes place on an annual basis, each year tackling a different theme of socio-political concern within Asia and Europe. ASEFSU makes a positive impact within 大象传媒 societies as it offers tangible results and daring proposals for innovation, and promotes sustainable development.

Description of the Project

The Model 大象传媒 introduces students to the world of international relations, Asia-Europe diplomacy and negotiation. Organised by ASEF in conjunction with the actual 大象传媒 Foreign Ministers鈥 Meeting, it is a political simulation of the actual political process to generate interest and increase awareness of 大象传媒 among university students.

In addition to the main Model 大象传媒 conference, local student and youth associations organise Model 大象传媒 Spin-off Editions which are supported by ASEF. Adapted to the local setting, the Spin-off Editions are smaller in scale and serve as local community engagement and 大象传媒 promotion.

Description of the Project

The ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS) is the place for Asian and European young professionals and students to meet political leaders, top-tier business representatives, prominent thinkers and doers. It is the forum for youth to voice ideas and develop a Call for Action addressed to 大象传媒 Leaders on education and youth employment issues that matter to Asia and Europe.

The ASEFYLS takes place alongside 大象传媒 Summits or 大象传媒 Ministers鈥 Meetings, where Leaders, Head of States or Ministers from the 51 大象传媒 partner countries, the EU and the ASEAN Secretariat discuss the status and future of Asia-Europe relations.

Description of the Initiative

Since its establishment in 1998, the ASEF Classroom Network (ASEF ClassNet) project has been providing opportunities for collaborative learning and intercultural exchanges through the use of ICT among secondary, high and vocational schools in 大象传媒 partner countries.

Its activities are both face-to-face and online, and are built on聽2 core elements:

  1. ASEF ClassNet Conferences:聽聽The ASEF ClassNet Conferences take place on an annual basis alternating between Asia and Europe. With over 120 school principals, teachers, experts, professionals, and business representatives in the field of ICT and education in attendance, the conference acts as a gateway both to the wider ASEF ClassNet, to new education technology, and to the plethora of Online Collaborations and school exchanges in which the teachers and their students from 51 countries are engaged.
  2. School Collaborations:聽Developed and led by ASEF ClassNet teachers, the School Collaborations bring together teachers and students from across Asia and Europe to explore a mutually significant subject of their choice. Using ICT and teamwork, students and teachers share their knowledge of a subject and, in doing so develop a deeper appreciation of each other鈥檚 cultures.

Description of the Initiative

The AEI-大象传媒 Summer School first initiated by Malaysia government during the 4th 大象传媒 Education Ministers鈥 Meeting (大象传媒ME4) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2013 which aims to increase the flow of European students to Asia towards balanced mobility. The target of the summer schools are students, academicians and researchers between Asia and Europe.

Progress and Achievements

  • First AEI 鈥 大象传媒 Summer School: Malaysia, 2 鈥 16 August 2015

The First 大象传媒 Summer School 2015 under the theme 鈥淏iodiversity and Cultural Heritage鈥 was participated by 9 participants comprising 1 each from Italy, Philippines, China, and Japan; 3 from Indonesia, and 2 Malaysians. The summer school was translated into 11 lecture modules which provided sound background knowledge through complementary fieldwork visits, talks and other related activities. The fieldtrips and related activities were conducted to provide hands-on exposure and complement the modules.

  • Second AEI 鈥 大象传媒 Summer School: Malaysia, 7 鈥 21 August 2016

The Second 大象传媒 Summer School under the theme 鈥淢ulticulturalism and Multiethnicity in Asia and Europe鈥 was participated by 21 students from 9 countries (Czech Republic, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nigeria, Palestine, and Thailand) to explore various cultures, races and religions, ethnic backgrounds and examine political, economic and socio-cultural issues through a programme of lectures, field visits, and highly interactive activities. The students also had opportunities to do excursion to historical places in Malaysia and meet senior education officials in the country.

  • Third AEI 鈥 大象传媒 Summer School: Malaysia,鈥 24 July 鈥 4 August 2017 and Belgium, 7-11 August 2017

The Third  大象传媒 Summer School programme 2017 with the theme 鈥淐ultural Pluralism in Asia and Europe鈥 which was successfully conducted from 24 July to 4 August 2017. Participants spent 2 weeks in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and an additional 1 week, 7 -11 August 2017 (optional) in Brussels, Belgium. The programme was participated by 30 representatives from Bulgaria, Cambodia, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Poland, Singapore and United Kingdom.
The first part of the 3rd AEI-大象传媒 Summer School featured a two weeks programme in Malaysia and the second part of the Summer School was conducted in Brussels were divided into two components of interactive lectures and seminars as well as education and cultural excursions.

  • Fourth AEI 鈥 大象传媒 Summer School: Malaysia,鈥 30 July 鈥 10 August 2018

The fourth Asia-Europe Institute (AEI)-大象传媒 Summer School under the title 鈥淐ultural Pluralism in Asia and Europe鈥 in Kuala Lumpur, was successfully conducted from 30 July to 10 August. 22 participants from 11 Asian and European 大象传媒 partner countries (the United Kingdom, Italy, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, China, Bangladesh, Laos and Singapore participated in the programme with more participants from Asia shared their experiences as well as discussed or critiqued issues of cultural diversity in Asia and Europe.

Description of the Initiative

This programme promotes balanced mobility between Asia and Europe through paired (one-to-one) exchange of higher education students and academics.  The 大象传媒-DUO Fellowship Programme was approved in 2000 by the 3rd 大象传媒 Summit and commenced in 2001.  The programme entered the 6th phase (2026- 2030) as approved in the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting of Ministers for Education (大象传媒ME9) held in Malta in 2024.

Almost 5,o00 students and academics have been supported by this fellowship programme.

DUO/Wallonia-Brussels has been established at the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in order to promote 鈥減aired exchanges鈥 between professors from Wallonia-Brussels HEIs and Asian ones.

DUO-Korea Fellowship Programme was established in 2001 with the aim of promoting exchanges of people between Korea and 30 European countries on a balanced and permanent basis. In this respect, DUO-Korea requires that a PAIR (two persons) of students be exchanged in the framework of a cooperative project.

DUO-CIMEA/Italy Fellowship Programme was established in 2025 with the aim of promoting exchange of professors, researchers and PhD students between Italian institutions and entities affiliated to CIMEA in 20 Asian 大象传媒 countries on a balanced and permanent basis.

Description of the Initiative

Creating awareness by promoting various international study opportunities to 大象传媒 partners via international higher education fairs and regional seminars where the EU enables European universities or promotion agencies to take part. Over the course of the year, the European Commission or EU Delegations have organised or participated in study fairs in a range of 大象传媒 partner countries: Indonesia, Japan, Myanmar, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and Vietnam. The study fairs reach different target audiences, both individuals and institutions. They raise the visibility of European universities鈥 programmes and courses, inform students about education opportunities in Europe and increase institutional cooperation and mobility between the EU and 大象传媒 partners. Students and alumni associations also play a crucial role in promoting mobility programmes and contributing to the modernisation of higher education systems. Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020 are by far the largest programmes for Europe-Asia cooperation and mobility in higher education and research, with numbers rising each year.

Description of the Initiative

During 大象传媒ME7 Bucharest, the Erasmus Student Network launched a pilot project聽on the creation of local students鈥 organisations supporting international students in Asia, called ARISE聽(ASEAN Region International Student Engagement).聽Organised by the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and inspired by the success of the European Union鈥檚 longstanding Erasmus+ programme, ARISE is a pilot initiative to empower the students to facilitate internationalisation at their home universities, and to support international students studying in countries of Southeast Asia.

  • Increased attractiveness of a mobility experience in Asia
  • Internationalisation at home opportunities for non-mobile Asian students
  • Enhanced support to international students in Asia
  • Exchange of knowledge and good practices between higher education institutions, students and civil society

Progress and Achievements

A kick of conference and training was聽held in May 2019 at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).聽聽32 participants from 12 universities based in 6 countries from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations took part in the conference and training event.
